Magic Band+ vs. MagicMobile: Do UK Guests Actually Need To Buy Magic Bands?
When you start planning your Walt Disney World holiday, you will inevitably see photos of people tapping colorful wristbands against glowing Mickey heads at turnstiles. These are Magic Bands, and for a long time, they were the only way to unlock the magic. But today, your smartphone can do almost everything a Magic Band can do-for free.
This leads to the big question every UK family asks: "Do we really need to spend £100+ on wristbands, or can we just use our phones?"
This guide breaks down the pros, cons, and costs of Magic Band+ vs. using Disney MagicMobile so you can decide what's right for your family
The Short Answer: Who Needs What?
If you are rushing to decide, here’s the verdict in a nutshell:
For Adults & Teens: You do not need a Magic Band+. Your iPhone, Android phone, or Apple Watch with MagicMobile downloaded does almost everything the Magic Band can do for free.
For Children (Ages 6 -12): Buying them a Magic Band. It gives them the independence of scanning themselves in and saves you from the stress of juggling 4 different digital passes on one phone screen at a busy turnstile. The Magic Band will also light up during shows and give kids some cool interactive things to explore in the parks.
Now lets get in to the details of how we got to this decision…

MagicMobile = Free
What is it?
Disney MagicMobile turns your smartphone (iPhone or Android) or your Apple Watch into a digital ticket. It lives in your phone's Wallet app, just like a digital debit card or loyalty card. And most importantly for anyone visiting Disney with a tight budget, this option is free.
How it works
If you have an iPhone, you can enable "Express Mode." This means you don't even need to wake your phone up, unlock it, or use Face ID. You simply tap the top of your dark phone against the reader, and it turns green.
If you have an android phone you will need to wake your phone up and use a fingerprint to gain access to your wallet to sign in.
Why Use MagicMobile
When making the decision whether to use MagicMobile, you often write a pros and cons list. We’re sharing ours here:
The pros of MagicMobile:
It's Free: No extra cost, you just add it to your phone.
Instant Setup: You can set it up at home in the UK before you fly, which means you’re good to go immediately when you land in Disney World. It’s also a pretty speedy set-up process, we’re talking half a cup of coffee and you’re done.
One Less Thing to Remember: Putting on a Magic Band isn’t difficult, but when morning are rushed because you want to rope drop, it’s can be something you forget. Your phone on the other hand, is something you’re more likely to remember then, as you already have your phone with you it makes sense to have MagicMobile on it.
The cons for MagicMobile
Battery Anxiety: If your phone dies, your ticket dies (and your hotel room key if you stay on-site!). And this happens more than you think when you factor in checking wait times in the app and snapping pictures and videos. This means you need to have a back-up plan, whether that’s a battery pack or a free plastic card.
The Shuffle at the Turnstile: If one parent holds all the tickets on one phone for a family, you have to tap-scan-tap-scan for every child at every park entrance. This can cause stress.
Kids And Phones: Handing your unlocked £1,000+ iPhone to an excited 7-year-old to scan their own ticket is a risky game. With the excitement and kids wanting to be independent parents give in for a moment, but one drop on the concrete could cost more than a holiday's worth of Magic Bands.
Tech Tip: If using an Apple Watch, we recommend Series 4 or newer for the fastest scanning. Older models work but can be a little slow to read at the turnstiles.
Magic Band+ = Paid
What is it?
A rechargeable wristband that acts as your park ticket, and if you stay on-site it acts as your room key and payment method. Magic Band+ is sold in the parks and at Disney shops around the resort; the current model is the Magic Band+ version 3.
How it works
You wear it on your wrist like a bracelet or watch. You tap the Mickey icon on the band against the touchpoints. It lights up, vibrates, and interacts with areas in the park.
Why Use Magic Bands
The pros for using Magic Bands include:
Greater Phone Freedom: You can leave your phone in your bag, no more fumbling around your park bag to get it out and no fear of dropping it while trying to scan into park entry points.
Interactive Fun: It interacts with the park in different ways including glowing during fireworks: it’s synced to the music. It lets you play Bounty Hunter games in Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge and there are gold statues in all the parks which you can bring to life (they make sounds) when you pass with a Magic Band+.
It’s fun and snazzy: It’s fun to use and wear, and you can pick a design to match your style.
Scan For Ride Photos: On rides like Expedition Everest, you can scan you Magic Band+ to claim your ride photo, which is convenient and fast, especially if you are trying to keep up with other people in your party.
The Cons
Cost: Prices start at $34.99 (£25.73) ) and go up to $60 (£44.12) and more for limited editions. For a family of 4, that's an extra $140 (£102.94) - $240 (£176.47).
Charging: The Magic Band+ needs to be charged using a USB charger; and it is possible you’ll have to do this during your trip so you need to pack a charger. If your Magic Band+ battery runs out of power mid-day, don't panic. It will stop lighting up and vibrating, but the Tap function, for entry and Lightning Lanes, still works even when vibration and lights stops.
The straps: These can be a bit flimsy and straps come undone easily if you don’t make sure to fasten them down. This can lead to loosing the Magic Band+.
The UK Challenge: Setting-up Magic Band vs MagicMobile
One of the biggest frustrations for UK guests is that Disney do not ship Magic Bands internationally. This means that UK guests cannot link their tickets to a prebought Magic Band+ before they head to Disney World, unless they are a returning visitor.
Returning visitors who have previously bought a Magic Band can use it for future trips, as you don’t need to buy a new Magic Band+ every time you visit. That is unless you want to, of course.
A MagicBand+ does not take long to link to a Magic Ticket, but if you want a Magic Band+ it is something you are best doing at the beginning of your trip, which adds time to your holiday. You need to go shopping and set it up, rather than being ready to go straight away with MagicMobile.
Buying a Magic Band+ is pretty easy.
Where to Buy
Since you can't get them posted to home, here are a couple of options, and a great money saving hack to get your Magic Band+ as a UK visitor landing in Orlando. Which ever option you choose, we recommend buying your Magic Band+ on day one.
Buy In MCO
There is a Disney Store in MCO that you have access to if you land in Terminal A or B as you exit. If you land in Terminal C the Disney Store is after security, so no good when you land. This Disney Store known as the Magic of Disney sells Magic Bands. So, whether you are killing time until you pick up a hire car, or just want to grab your Magic Band as soon as you can, this is one option you have.
Buy In Resort
If you stay on-site there will be a resort shop, and they all stock Magic Band+. You can head straight there after dropping your bags in your room and pick up your Magic Bands.
Disney Springs
There are a lot of places to buy Magic Bands in Disney Springs but World of Disney has a huge choice. Pick up your Magic Band+ here the first day you land.
Outlet Secret
Head to the Disney Character Warehouse at the Vineland Premium Outlet Mall. Choice is restricted and they may not have a Magic Band+ in, but if they do it will save you significant cost. Magic Bands can be picked up for a few dollars and worn all trip.
Note: Where ever you buy your Magic Band+, linking a new band takes 30 seconds with free on-site Wi-Fi. You can buy it at 9:00 AM and be using it at 9:05 AM.
What about the "Old" Magic Bands?
You might have a Magic Band, (the non-rechargeable ones), from a previous trip in 2018 or 2022 and be wondering if they still work? The answer is yes! Even if the internal battery is dead (which prevents long-range ride photos), the "Tap" function to enter parks and hotel rooms uses a different chip that never runs out. a
Overall Verdict
What Should You Do? Well that is always going to comedown to personal choice. If you’re on a budget, consider grabbing the kids some Magic Bands at the Outlets and adults and teens use phones. But if you like the Magic Banddesigns and you’re looking to minimise being on your phone while you’re at Walt Disney World, the Magic Band is a fun and convenient way to achieve that. But, no matter whether you get the Magic Band or not, download MagicMobile as a back-up anyway, it won’t cost a penny and gives you more peace of mind.
Magic Bands
Magic Bands are not a perk, as you have to buy them, but they do offer benefits that you don’t get if you stay off-site. Buying a Magic Band is a personal choice, and not necessary for an on-site stay, but if you do have one there are extra on-site benefits. Not only does the Magic Band act as a room key; you can also use your Magic Band as your wallet around resort.
You can charge purchases straight to your Disney resort room using you Magic Band, whether your buying a dole whip in Magic Kingdom or dinner in your hotel quick service. Tap your Magic Band and enter the pin you set in the My Disney App. Then all your resort charges appear together on your final resort bill, which you settle at check-out or through the My Disney Experience App. Only on-site guests can use their Magic Bands in this way.
