When you head to Disney World as a family with children, especially those under 10, you start wondering what rides your little ones will be able to ride. Fortunately, Disney World is one of those places where children can ride most rides, …% of Disney rides have a 0cm height requirement.

There are however a number of rides in each of the four Disney theme parks and two Disney water parks that do have height requirements. Don’t let the height requirements put you off though, Disney has something called Rider Switch which allows everyone who meets the height requirement to ride while only having to join a stand-by queue line once.

What Is The Height Requirement For Disney World?

There is not one specific height requirement for Disney World rides. Everyone is able to enter the parks, and there are plenty of attractions anyone of any height, or age, can go on.

How Do They Measure Height At Disney World?

Disney World checks height in a simple, consistent way, and it's usually quicker (and calmer) than many parents expect.

Children are measured in their shoes

Disney measures children wearing their shoes, as that's how they'll ride. Height requirements are shown on official measuring sticks at the entrance to any ride with a minimum height.

Height is usually checked twice

For most attractions with a height rule, there are two checkpoints:

  1. At the queue entrance

A Cast Member will check your child against the height marker before you join the line. If they're too small, you'll be stopped here so you don't waste time queueing.

  1. Again near the loading area

Some rides re-check height just before boarding. This is a normal safety double-check, especially on thrill rides.

If they're not tall enough, they can't ride; even if it's close

Disney is strict about height rules. If your child doesn't meet the requirement, they won't be allowed to ride, even if they're only slightly under. Cast Members will ask children to stand normally (flat feet, no tiptoes), and adding height with hairstyles won't be accepted. Sometimes if your child is not tall enough to ride Cast Members give children little keepsakes for when they are able to ride.

Will your child be measured once for the whole day?

There isn't a universal one-and-done height checking system across Walt Disney World, so your child may be measured multiple times at different attractions during your day. This is because different attractions have different height requirements.

What if your child is too small to ride?

If someone in your party doesn't meet the height requirement, (or doesn't want to ride), you can use Rider Switch so adults can take turns riding without queueing twice. We have a full guide to Rider Switch including a step-by-step walk through of how to use the system.

How Tall Should Kids Be To Go To Disney World?

There is no right height for children to go to Disney World and there is always an attraction for you to take younger children on. If you are looking to avoid thinking about height restrictions at all here are the heights your children need to be for the Disney World theme parks:

  • To avoid height restrictions on rides in Magic Kingdom your children need to be 122cm or taller

  • To avoid height restrictions on rides in EPCOT your children need to be 113cm or taller

  • To avoid height restrictions on rides in Hollywood Studios children need to be 122cm or taller

  • To avoid rides with height restrictions in Animal Kingdom children need to be 113cm or taller

Planning: Tips For Checking Heights Before You Go

With a longer planning timeline of 12-18 months for many UK visitors, working out whether your child can ride something before you book is often impractical. But, checking their height before you go helps you decide whether you’ll need to use Rider Switch.

If you decide to measure your little ones height before you go, pop their shoes on first as Cast Members measure children in shoes. Also keep in mind that just because they are tall enough to ride does not mean that they will enjoy the ride.

Next we’ll take a look at the height restrictions per park to help you plan your itinerary with younger children.

FAQs: Height Requirements

Do they measure kids with shoes on at Disney World?

Yes. Children are measured wearing their shoes, as that's what they'll have on when they board the ride.

Will my child be measured more than once?

Often, yes. Many attractions check height at the queue entrance, and some will re-check near the loading area as a safety double-check.

What if my child is just under the height requirement?

Disney is strict. If your child doesn't meet the minimum height, they won't be allowed to ride, even if they're only slightly under. Cast Members will ask children to stand normally (flat feet, no tiptoes).

What can we do if our child can't ride?

Use Rider Switch so adults can take turns riding without queueing twice. This is one of the easiest ways for families to enjoy headline attractions while travelling with younger children.

Can I get my child measured once for the whole day?

No, there is not one simple height check you can do. Rides have different height requirements and children will be checked at each ride.
